About
The Kim Sakgat Culture Festival is held in Yeongwol to honor the life and literary legacy of Nango Kim Byeong-yeon, better known as Kim Sakgat, a wandering poet of the late Joseon era. Kim Sakgat traveled the country wearing a wide-brimmed hat (sakgat), satirizing the authority and hypocrisy of his time while capturing the everyday joys and sorrows of ordinary people with humor. Started in 1998, the festival is held every autumn around the historic site in Yeongwol's Kim Sakgat-myeon, which includes his tomb, former residence, and the Nango Kim Sakgat Literature Museum. Main programs include a memorial rite for Kim Sakgat, the Kim Sakgat Literary Award ceremony, a nationwide literary contest and calligraphy competition, a reenactment of the Joseon-era state exam, and academic events on literature. Alongside these, there are performances, exhibitions, and hands-on programs themed around his wandering life, wit, and artistic spirit. The festival aims to shed light on Kim Sakgat's life and literary legacy, carrying forward the meaning of his satire and humor for a modern audience.
