Jeonju Hanji Cultural Festival

Since it launched in 1997, the Jeonju Hanji Culture Festival has led the way in industrializing and globalizing Jeonju hanji (traditional mulberry paper), helping spread the excellence of this thousand-year-old craft far and wide. The festival also reinterprets hanji's many functions and values through a cultural lens, expressing the beauty and worth of paper that has stayed by people's side for generations. The annual "National Hanji Craft Competition" uncovers hanji works made with care and skill by craftspeople from across the country, contributing to the growth and broader reach of hanji craft. The "National Children's Hanji Art Contest" lets kids express their boundless imagination and creativity on hanji paper, helping the next generation naturally encounter Korea's own hanji culture and come to understand its value and beauty. In these ways, the Jeonju Hanji Culture Festival goes beyond preserving and developing traditional hanji — it reinterprets hanji as a modern cultural content and creates a space where generations can enjoy culture and art together, all while spreading the value of Jeonju hanji at home and abroad.
